Jaylen Brown publicly addressed his stunning trade from the Boston Celtics to the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday, describing the move as both emotional and motivating after spending a decade with the franchise.
As reported on Wednesday, the Celtics sent the five-time All-Star wing to Philly in exchange for veteran forward Paul George alongside substantial draft assets, including two future first-round draft picks and two second-round selections. Brown, 29, departs as one of the most accomplished players in recent Celtics history after helping lead Boston to the 2024 NBA championship and emerging as one of the NBA’s top two-way stars. The move also brings an end to the long-running partnership between Brown and Jayson Tatum that anchored the Celtics’ championship window.
In his first official statement since the blockbuster deal was announced, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP acknowledged he is still coming to terms with the transaction, writing, “First and foremost, thank you to the Most High, even in the midst of adversity. I’m here with gratitude. I’m still processing how this all went down. I’m excited and disappointed at the same time.”
The star guard emphasized that his long-standing bond with the Boston community was established entirely on personal work ethic and mutual appreciation, noting, “I earned my respect from this city. I never asked for shortcuts or special treatment. I simply showed up every day, put my head down, and accepted every challenge.” Brown further indicated that parting ways with the franchise where he secured a world championship was an emotional challenge. “The relationships I built here, the battles we fought together, the championship we brought to this city, and the connection I shared with the fans, I’ll carry on with me,” he stated, adding that “Saying goodbye isn’t easy when you’ve invested your heart into something.”
Despite the disappointment of leaving, Brown expressed enthusiasm about integrating into a revamped Philadelphia roster featuring perennial All-Stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Looking forward to establishing himself within a new fan base, Brown asserted, “I’m big on respect and actions speak louder than words. To the people of Boston, thank you. To the community I built here I love you, and to the shiftaz we are locked in for life
As one chapter closes, another begins.”
He continued by focusing on the standard of excellence expected by his new fanbase: “I’m excited for what’s ahead and grateful for the opportunity to join Philadelphia. Every city has its own identity, its own passion, and its own expectation. I respect that, and I’m looking forward to earning that respect the only way I know how.. through the work. “Philly – throw the ball up let’s get it!”“
Brown enters Philadelphia following arguably the finest season of his career, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists while earning All-NBA Second Team honors and finishing among the league’s top MVP candidates.
