Decision to set limits

Victor Martinez's young son is well-known to a lot of players and coaches for his enthusiasm, good nature, love of baseball and talent. On a sleepy day in spring training a few years ago, little Victor — as some players and staffers refer to him — was at the Detroit Tigers' facility going through initial stretching with his dad and the other players.

As that preparation drew to a conclusion, the players formed a line near first base to begin a baserunning drill, and little Victor ambled over to join the group.

The father reached over, gently grasped his son's hand and led him off the field, into foul territory, where little Victor plopped onto the grass and watched, grumpily.

It's OK to join dad at work sometimes, but there are hard lines of what is permitted and what is not.

Later, when big Victor chuckled about his son's passion for baseball, he said that his boy — about 8 years old then and now approaching his teenage years — hates that time when he is away from the ballpark.

So after the initial sympathy card was played and the truth emerged about Adam LaRoche's son — that the White Sox had asked LaRoche to dial it back when it came to bringing his son to the park — it was apparent that the White Sox are like a lot of other baseball teams. Heck, they're like a lot of other companies that aren't related to sports, too. The White Sox don't have a problem if you bring your kid to work. Just not all the time.

There aren't many places of business where an employee can bring his or her child to work daily. This is why day care was invented.
