Greinke dominating

Zack Greinke's scoreless innings streak has reached 27 2/3 innings after his dominant performance against the Mets on Saturday night, and his ERA for the season is at 1.48. Greinke says he doesn't think about his innings streak, writes Anthony Witrado. But I suspect that Greinke is being modest, and he probably thinks about his results more than most pitchers this season, given how much he could have riding on this year.

Greinke signed a six-year, $147 million deal with the Dodgers before the 2013 season, but it contains an opt-out clause that he can exercise this fall, and Greinke is throwing so well and is such an unusual pitcher that it seems like a foregone conclusion that he'll test the market again.

Greinke turns 32 in October, and sometime right after the All-Star break, he will log the 2,000th inning of his career, the sort of accumulation that some general managers reflexively run away from these days. If Andrew Friedman, who oversees baseball operations for the Dodgers, remains as disciplined as he has throughout his career and focuses on the numbers of regression common in aging pitchers, he may well pass on the chance to give Greinke another long-term contract.

But Greinke is unusual in a lot of ways, other than his tendency to be dead honest.
