16 area teams to take part in ET Summer Baseball League

The East Tennessee Summer Baseball League is about to get underway and, judging from the list of entries, a full couple of months of baseball can be expected.
Sixteen teams are entered in the local East Division. The league is being run by Boyd Sports.
The idea is to give the teams a place to play after their high school spring seasons were canceled just about as soon as they started because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Hopefully we can give our fans an experience that there’s still baseball being played,” Johnson City Cardinals manager Zac Clark said. “We want to give these kids back their season that they lost.”
The league will start June 8 with games on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City and Elizabethton’s Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark. Games will start at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each night.
Fans are going to be invited, although they’ll be asked to practice safe social distancing. Admission will be $5 a game and specially priced season passes will be available.
“We’re going to welcome the community,” Clark said. “We hope the community will come out and support these kids.”
The teams participating are Dobyns-Bennett (Tribe), Sullivan East (Patriots), Sullivan North (Raiders), Cherokee (Wahoos), Volunteer (Volunteers), David Crockett (The Boro), Science Hill (Wolves), Elizabethton (Cyclones), Tennessee High (Vikings), Abingdon (Falcons), John Battle (Express), Hampton (Bulldogs), University High (Bucs and Braves), Providence Academy (Redwings) and Greeneville (Demons). University High has two teams entered.
Play starts with two games on June 8 when The Boro plays the Wahoos in Johnson City. In Elizabethton, the first game pits the Patriots against the Express.
The 12-team West Division will be played at Smokies Stadium in Sevierville. Details are still being worked out, but a one-game playoff between the winners of each division is being discussed.
